WHERE ARE THE IMPLANTS PLACED? IN FRONT OR BEHIND THE MUSCLE?
Often cause for discussion among (future) patients is whether their implant was /is placed "in front of or behind the muscle".
An implant can be placed in different ways, depending on the type of implant, the desired enlargement and the body proportions:
- IN FRONT OF/ABOVE THE MUSCLE i.e. SUBFASCIAL
- PARTLY BEHIND/UNDER THE MUSCLE i.e. DUAL PLANE
- FULLY BEHIND THE MUSCLE
The advantages of placement IN FRONT OF/ABOVE THE MUSCLE are:
- Smoother and less painful recovery
- More natural result because the implant moves with its own tissue. With the most recent ergonomic gel implants, you often no longer feel the implants 'sitting' separately.
- Less chance of the "double bubble" being a double fold as a result of the own breast tissue dropping over the implant.
Plastic Surgeon Nelissen follows the recent evolutions and latest medical techniques in this area (by following conferences and guest operations with renowned colleagues) and for that reason usually prefers the placement in front of / above the muscle for the type of implants he places.
Of course, there are always exceptions where a different type of placement is preferable based on the physique.
Therefore, the placement of the implant (in front of or above the muscle) is decided together with the patient during the consultation.
