EYELID SURGERY - BROW LIFT
WHAT IS EYELID SURGERY?
- Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. It is the recommended treatment to get a natural, fresh, open look again.
- This surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids or both, and can also be combined with a brow lift.
- Eyelid corrections are in the top 5 most commonly performed surgeries by Plastic Surgeon Dr Nelissen in the Global Care Clinic.
WHAT IS A BROW LIFT?
- With a tired look, the explanation is usually sought in an excess of eyelid skin (to be remedied with an eyelid correction).
- In many cases, however, the cause appears to be (partly) a drooping eyebrow, so that an eyebrow lift, whether or not combined with an eyelid correction, will be the ideal treatment.
- Hence the importance of having the treatment done by someone who is trained and experienced in the surgical treatments of the complete facial anatomy.
Indications
- Are you often asked if you are tired or angry? Due to aging and gravity, the sagging of tissues and the appearance of wrinkles, our eyes get a tired or angry look and this from around the age of 35. We are confronted with this when we see tired eyes in the mirror in the morning, even though we have had a good night's sleep.
- The upper and lower eyelids show a tired look with excess skin and sagging puffiness.
- Applying make-up is becoming increasingly difficult or lasts less time.
- This is sometimes worsened by sagging eyebrows ("brow lift").
WHAT EYELID - brow SURGERY CAN TREAT
- Loose, sagging or overhanging skin of the upper eyelids
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles in the lower eyelids
- Fat deposits that appear as puffiness in the lower eyelids
- Sagging eyebrows (brow lift)
Treatment
Together with plastic surgeon Dr Nelissen, we will look at what the most suitable treatment is for you: upper eyelids and / or lower eyelids and / or eyebrow lift.
Remember that the eyelids are part of the overall picture of the face. The plastic surgeon will therefore not be limited to removing "some skin in the upper eyelids" but will improve the overall image of the eyes and the region around them:
- by removing excess skin
- by removing excess fat and lifting sagging fat
- by possibly also doing an eyebrow lift.
Your plastic surgeon Dr. Nelissen will thoroughly evaluate your total facial anatomy beforehand and discuss which treatments can best address your concerns. For example, a drooping upper eyelid can also be caused by a drooping eyebrow, so in that case an eyebrow lift is recommended.
An eyelid correction can also be combined with an anti-wrinkle injection, Medical Peeling,...

Specific possible temporary side-effects to eyelid surgery can be:
- skin discoloration (redness) and oedema in the early healing phase.
- the normal drainage of teardrops can be impaired and you may ‘sense’ more tears or “watery” eyes due to swelling immediately after a lower eyelid correction.
- redness or oedema of the eye sclera (white around the pupils).
- If any questions or problems with your vision occur, you need to contact your surgeon or ophthalmologist immediately.
