NOSE SURGERY (rhinoplasty)
what is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, often referred to as "nose job" or "nose reshaping" by patients, enhances facial harmony and the proportions of your nose.
WHAT RHINOPLASTY CAN TREAT:
- change the existing nose tip,
- take away a hump
- reduce the size of the nose.
It will improve the appearance of the nose to balance it better with other facial features.
If you desire a more symmetrical nose, keep in mind that everyone's face is assymetric to some degree. Results may not be completely symmetric, although the goal is to create facial balance and correct proportion.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR RHINOPLASTY?
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:
- your facial growth is complete
- you are physically health with no medical conditions that can impair healing
- you are a nonsmoker
- you have a positive outlook and realistic goals in mind for the improvement of you appearance.
Ultrasonic nose sculpture - piezo technique
Plastic surgeon Dr. Nelissen applies the ultrasonic nose sculpture technique.
- This is an improved procedure to correct the nose with the Piezo device.
- This device is an improvement on the conventional instruments such as rasp, hammer, ... It's a bit like an electronic toothbrush. The technique of the Piezo-surgery is known for more than 40 years in other medical fields such as oral surgery. This technique was further developed for nose jobs by Paris plastic surgeon Dr Gerbault. The accuracy and precision of this device allows the plastic surgeon to have a much better control during the procedure.
The benefits of the ultrasonic rhinoplasty are:
- Better visual control during surgery, because the full nasal pyramid is visible.
- Better control over the position of the fracture and prevention of unnecessary ruptures.
- The bone is carved and sculpted easier than with conventional instruments.
- It can also be applied to thin bone structure (some women) or for brittle bones (from 40-45 year)
- Asymmetry of the nose can easily be corrected.
- Finally, patients are less marked after surgery, have much less bruising, and can so also much faster return to their normal social activities.
OPEN OR CLOSED PROCEDURE
- A rhinoplasty is performed either using the closed or the open procedure.
- An ‘open Rhinoplasty’ has the advantage that the plastic surgeon has a better view on the structures of the nose, making the correction more accurate. The skin of the nose is detached from the underlying cartilage. The swelling of the nose will take a little longer because the lymphatic drainage is disturbed. In most cases the scar will no longer be visible after a few weeks.
COMBINATION WITH OTHER TREATMENTS
A nose job is often combined with other procedures.
- Sometimes a too big nose is extra accentuated by a small chin, in which case a chin implant can lead to a better balance in the face.
- In some cases a functional correction is needed, for example to correct a nasal septum or after a fracture.

Course of your treatment
We refer to the information mentioned under course of treatment. Please read this information very carefully.
A second preoperative consultation (preferably together with a partner or friend) is advised for nasal surgery. Bring along some old photos (front and side view). We also recommend that you think in advance about the 3 most important points that you would like to have changed on your nose.
Side-effects / postoperative complications
This surgery has the same risks as any other surgery. Please read more information on possible side effects here. The specific risks and possible complications are also explained during the interview with the plastic surgeon.
